THE 21 SLEEP
MANAGEMENT
PROMOTING REGULAR SLEEP HABITS AMONG USERS
INDIVIDUAL PROJECT
RESEARCH & PLANNING

The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) serves as the framework for the low-fidelity prototype evaluation, involving feedback from five participants. Notably, the system evaluation occurs through shared Figma interactions with participants.
The process involves:
-
Question Creation:
-
Formulating fifteen questions aligned with TAM criteria to assess user perceptions.
-
-
Scoring System:
-
Assigning scores from 1 to 4 (strongly disagree to strongly agree) for participants to rate their experiences.
-
-
Data Collection:
-
Sharing an Excel/Google Sheet link for participants to input their responses based on their interactions with the application.
-
-
Analysis:
-
Calculating the average and standard deviation from the collected scores on the Google Sheet.
-
This comprehensive approach enables a thorough analysis of user feedback, providing insights into the participants' perceptions and interactions with the app based on TAM principles

The TAM bar chart illustrates the efficacy of this methodology in guiding the development of my app. With active participation from five users, their scores across fifteen questions reveal a positive trend, with a majority receiving ratings of 3 (agree) or 4 (strongly agree). Notably, the absence of any ratings at the lowest level (1) and only a few at level 2 underscores the overall satisfaction and alignment with the positive tones of the questions. These results affirm a cohesive and favorable reception among participants, signaling a consistent and constructive stance on the usability aspects of the application. The minimal disagreements further validate the TAM method's effectiveness in shaping a user-centric and well-received app.

Based on these findings, I created a persona for whom we would tailor our design.

DATA ANALYSIS
Enhancing Usability Through Iterative Changes
In response to user feedback indicating dissatisfaction with the system's usability, a series of iterative changes were implemented. Firstly, the navigation bar underwent a transformation, with each option now housed in a separate box for improved clarity. Additionally, to align with user preferences for simplicity, accompanying texts were removed from beneath each icon. Addressing motivational concerns, rewards were revamped to include more enticing offerings like drinks, cinema tickets, Amazon gift cards, and Netflix subscriptions from the Star box. To enhance user orientation, a color light box indicating the current page was added to the navigation bar. Finally, recognizing the user's desire for insights into their lifestyle, psychology questionnaires were introduced on the More page, providing a holistic view of their health and well-being.
DESIGNING THE SOLUTION
Incorporating insights garnered from user feedback through TAM, open-ended questions, and follow-up inquiries, the medium fidelity prototype has undergone thoughtful refinement. The design enhancements aim to address user preferences, streamline functionality, and ensure a more intuitive and user-centric experience.
Enhancements from Low Fidelity to Medium Fidelity Prototype:
-
Revamped Rewards System:
-
Addressed user dissatisfaction by replacing sound rewards with more appealing options: gift card from Amazon, a complimentary cinema ticket, a one-month free subscription to Netflix, and a free drink from Star box.
-
-
Progress Tracker for Rewards:
-
Introduced a dynamic progress tracker, enabling users to visualize their proximity to earning a reward and providing motivation to continue their efforts.
-
-
Navigation Bar Clarity:
-
Responding to user feedback on navigation bar clarity, implemented changes such as deleting texts under icons, using distinct colors for different options, and adding highlights to denote the current page.
-
-
More Page Redesign:
-
Enhanced options on the More page, aligning them with psychological aspects.
-
Introduced specific factors (stress, mood, relationship) influencing sleep quality, with associated questions to gauge users' experiences.
-
Weekly Sleep Questionnaire: Allows users to self-assess and track changes in their sleep quality over time.
-
Transparency in Scores: Users can now view their questionnaire scores and self-evaluate their progress in the app.
-
These strategic changes aim to create a more engaging, user-centric, and psychologically informed medium fidelity prototype, aligning with user needs and behaviors identified during the research phase.

USER TESTING
Method: Think Aloud
For a nuanced understanding of user interactions and behaviors within the medium fidelity prototype, the Think Aloud method was chosen to complement quantitative data from the TAM method. This approach involves presenting users with specific tasks and open-ended questions, allowing observation of their engagement with the app. By combining structured tasks with spontaneous user input, the evaluation aims to gather comprehensive insights, informing ongoing refinement of the application.
UPGRADED UX GOALS

Enhancements from Medium Fidelity to High Fidelity Prototype:
Drawing on user feedback gathered through the Think Aloud method, open-ended questions, follow-up inquiries, and observational insights, the high-fidelity prototype has been meticulously crafted. This iterative design process ensures that user perspectives and interactions shape the final iteration of the application, prioritizing usability and addressing user needs effectively.

The transition from medium to high fidelity brought several impactful changes based on user research and feedback:
-
App Name: Renamed from "Sleep Regularly" to "The 21-Day Sleep Management," emphasizing the goal of fostering a healthy sleep habit within a defined period.
-
Onboarding Information: Added informative content during installation, providing users with a better understanding of the app's purpose and features.

These refinements aim to create a more engaging, informative, and user-centric experience, aligning the app with the specific goal of fostering regular and healthy sleep habits.
CONCEPTUAL DESIGN REFINEMENT
In refining the conceptual design, the core system requirements remain focused on promoting regular sleep through rewards and timely reminders. However, recognizing user preferences for a streamlined experience, the questionnaire assessing lifestyle health is removed. Users expressed a desire for a sleep-specific app without extensive information, redirecting the emphasis to fostering healthy sleep habits. Consequently, the "More" page is replaced with a dedicated "Settings" icon, enabling users to adjust alarms for the upcoming three weeks. Metaphors, represented by icons such as the clock for alarms, earphones for sleep sounds, medals for rewards, and bar chart for sleep history, remain consistent. This refinement aims to tailor the app to users' primary goal of establishing and maintaining regular sleep patterns efficiently.
